INTRO TO KOORIE CULTURE

LEARNING OUTCOMES
By participating in the “Introduction to Koorie Culture” students will:
- Be shown sites of cultural significance to the Kulin peoples in the heart of Melbourne
- Through cultural interpretation, be shown the sequences of some key events in Australian (Melbourne) history, and key aspects of the histories of cultural groups that make up their class, community and nation
- Develop an understanding of the history of pre-settlement Kulin people and society
- Learn about the changed ecology of the Melbourne CBD landscape.
- Develop an understanding of the interconnection between the natural environment and the Indigenous Kulin people, and broadening that interconnection to all people
- Develop an understanding of the continuum of Koorie cultural practices
- Develop a deeper understanding of the significant changes to the traditional peoples of the Kulin nation as a consequence of the creation of Melbourne as a European settlement.
- Develop an understanding of the significant changes to the Indigenous environment brought about by European settlement.
- Observe how places in their local area have changed over time, and how people use and affect different environments in Victoria (Melbourne)
- Be introduced to the local Indigenous language of the Kulin Nation through cultural interpretation.
- Develop an understanding of the complex language groups and kinship systems that operate in the Koorie community
- Develop an understanding of the contribution of people from the many culturally diverse groups that make up the Melbourne community, learn about how changes to Indigenous people and environment are still occurring
- Be introduced to the functions and designs of a variety of tools and artefacts of the Koorie community
- Develop an understanding of the diversity of Koorie Culture in south-eastern Australia
WALKIN' BIRRARUNG - YARRA RIVER CULTURAL TOUR
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By participating in the “Walkin’ Birrarung” Yarra cultural tour students will:
- Be shown sites of cultural significance to the Kulin peoples in the heart of Melbourne.
- Through cultural interpretation, be shown the sequences of some key events in Australian (Melbourne) history, and key aspects of the histories of cultural groups that make up their class, community and nation
- Develop an understanding of the history of pre-settlement Kulin people and society
- Learn about the changed ecology of the Birrarung.
- Develop an understanding of the interconnection between the natural environment and the Indigenous Kulin people, and broadening that interconnection to all people
- Develop an understanding of the continuum of Koorie cultural practices
- Develop a deeper understanding of the significant changes to the traditional peoples of the Kulin nation as a consequence of the creation of Melbourne as a European settlement.
- Identify and discuss the qualities of leadership through historical and contemporary examples
- Develop an understanding of the significant changes to the Indigenous environment brought about by European settlement
- Develop an understanding of contemporary issues and events, learn about different perspectives on some contemporary issues and propose possible solutions to problems
- Observe how places in their local area have changed over time, and how people use and affect different environments in Victoria (Melbourne)
- Be introduced to the local Indigenous language of the Kulin Nation through cultural interpretation
- Develop an understanding of the contribution of people from the many culturally diverse groups that make up the Melbourne community, learn about how changes to Indigenous people and environment are still occurring
- Learn about your own contribution towards impacts on place and culture
- Deepen your identity towards Melbourne as a place, and your place within it
