Course Overview

To raise participants’ awareness of:

  • Systemic disadvantage that has resulted from the dispossession of Aboriginal land and culture;
  • The negative impact of stereotyping on Victoria’s Indigenous communities;
  • The significance of cultural diversity within Victoria’s Indigenous communities;
  • The richness of Victoria’s Aboriginal cultural heritage;
  • Reasons for the delivery of programs and services to Indigenous communities; and
  • Opportunities for Indigenous people to contribute to education, training and employment within Departments.
  • A highly successful Cultural enterprise designed to radically alter your existing perceptions of people and place, and challenges your own preconceived connections.
Designed For

Designed for all staff as a “Gateway” program - to begin the process of knowledge and understanding into Victorian Indigenous Culture and Community.
Staff who have previously attended Indigenous Cross Cultural Awareness Training should decide whether they wish to re-enrol.

Program Content
  • Begins with ‘Walkin Birrarung - the Yarra River Cultural Experience (2 hour walk)
  • A historical overview of Aboriginal life in Victoria, which includes a tour of the Koorie Heritage Trust Cultural Centre and its role as a peak Indigenous community based organisation.
  • Past government policies and the effect of such policies on Indigenous communities today – the colonization process
  • Relevant current statistics and other information on Indigenous communities in Victoria
  • Relevant programs operating in communities
  • Relevant community organizations and the functions of community organizations
  • Communication and engaging with Indigenous communities – decolonisation and reconciliation
Learning Outcomes
  • Awareness of the richness of Aboriginal people and Cultural heritage, with a specific focus on the local Victorian Indigenous experience;
  • Counter and demystify stereotyping;
  • Changing participants outlooks on the significance of cultural diversity and outlooks on connection to “place”;
  • The systemic negative factors that have impacted upon Indigenous people and culture, and its continued affect upon contemporary Indigenous Australians
  • An avenue of thought toward improving the delivery of programs and services to Indigenous communities;
  • Seeking opportunities for Indigenous people to contribute to education, training and employment within Departments.
