East Gippsland Aboriginal Art Corporation

The East Gippsland Aboriginal Art Corporation’s role is to advocate the advancement of Aboriginal visual and performing arts and crafts within the East Gippsland region.

They have been established for over 10 years and are committed to promoting established or emerging local Indigenous Artists.

Each featured Artist brings their own preferred and unique style, fusing together traditional stories with contemporary techniques.

Judy is a Gungarri woman, originally from Queensland, who has lived in the Echuca region for 17 years. She creates contemporary and abstract Aboriginal art in acrylic, oils, pastels, mixed media and enamel on canvas. Judy also produces
postcards and large prints of her original works. She has been commissioned by a number of leading restaurants in her area and is branching out to providing art pieces for the corporate sector.

Judy’s life experiences have been wide and unusual, promoting a strong sense of independence and survival. Her artistic expression demonstrates her journey of self discovery. Her customers can see and feel the emotion of the paintings.

Phoebe Nicholson and Esther Kirby will also be exhibiting.

‘ngathook mangnooroo watanoo’

“Land, language and identity is who we are. We belong to our Country, she is our Mother. We are connected to each other through family and kinship, our totems and skin. Our blood and bones come from the Land and our stories are in it. I come from ‘ngathook mangnooroo watanoo’.

The works in this exhibition depict connectedness to Country and belonging to family. A variety of mediums are used from acrylic on canvas, pastel on paper, prints, pelts and feathers.

The artists are Vicki Couzens and her daughters;
Jarrah, Yaraan, Marlee, Niyoka and Kirrae Bundle.
